Malaysia Pathways
Choose the right stay before you file the wrong one.
Independent pathway advice for living or working in Malaysia — MM2H, DE Rantau, Employment Pass & more.
Four core pathways
Match the stay to the life you actually want.
We sit at the decision layer: who each pathway fits, what breaks applications, and when a popular option is the wrong answer.
- MM2H Long-stay residence Retirees, semi-retirees, and families seeking multi-year presence without a local employment sponsor.
- DE Rantau Remote / nomad stay Digital workers employed or contracting abroad who need a clear Malaysia base for a defined window.
- Employment Pass Sponsored work When a Malaysian company is hiring you — categories, salary floors, and sponsor obligations matter.
- PVIP / Dependent Family & high-net-worth Long-stay family options and PVIP — including when EP or MM2H is the wrong frame.
Quick chooser
Pick by goal, not by keyword.
A short map of intent → likely pathway. Full criteria still belong on official notices — we help you read them against your situation.
| If your goal is… | Start here | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Remote work for a foreign employer | DE Rantau | Income proof; working on the wrong pass |
| A Malaysian company wants to hire you | Employment Pass | Sponsor docs, category, salary floor |
| Retire or semi-retire long-term | MM2H / PVIP | Financial criteria; outdated threshold PDFs |
| Relocate with spouse and kids | EP + Dependent / MM2H | Principal status first; age & relationship proof |
Failure modes
Three mistakes that stall strong applicants.
- Filing the fashionable pathway first. MM2H or DE Rantau gets searched hardest — that does not mean it fits a sponsored hire, or that EP fits a remote founder.
- Treating property purchase as stay rights. Buying a home does not grant immigration status. Ownership myths waste months and fees.
- Using superseded threshold PDFs. Financial floors, income letters, and process steps move. Cite the current official notice, not last year’s blog screenshot.
